Emerald is riding a three game winning streak (Carolina, Southside, Berea) in which their average margin of victory was 38 points. Crescent won their last game in a 36-0 shutout over West Oak. The Vikings and Tigers had only one common foe this season: Palmetto. Both schools lost their match-ups against the Mustangs. Emerald fell 36-14 while Crescent lost 42-34. Crescent’s overall record of 8-2 does not overpower Emerald’s record of 4-6 when their out-of-conference foes are considered. Crescent played Calhoun Falls, Dixie, Palmetto, Fox Creek, Ware Shoals, and Liberty. Emerald played a tougher schedule against Greenwood, Abbeville, Ninety Six, Strom Thurmond, and BHP.

Recent History

In 2015, Crescent had a record of 3 wins, 7 losses (0-5 in their region) and failed to make the playoffs. Emerald had a record of 8 wins, 4 losses (6-2 in their region). They were defeated 38-6 in the opening round of the playoffs by Richland Northeast.

Ancient History

Emerald and Crescent were both members of Region 1-AA from 2008-2009. Emerald swept the two year series. In 2008, the two schools played at Iva, with Emerald prevailing 36-0. The following year Emerald defeated Crescent 21-20 at home.

The Future

It is a sure bet that tonight’s game will be a tough matchup between two deserving teams. Will Emerald make it three wins in a row against Crescent? Only time will tell. The winner of tonight’s game will move on to play Newberry (7-3) or Indian Land (2-8).

Coach K’s Keys to Success

Football vs Berea 353

Coach Barry Kinard outlined three goals that must be accomplished for the Vikings to be victorious tonight.

  1. The defense must stop Crescents double-wing running attack.
  2. The offense must secure the football.
  3. The team must win the battle for time of possession.
