Wrestling v GWD 699

Many of our readers will remember the night of January 9, 2017 as the night that Clemson won the NCAA Championship. There is a group of Emerald wrestlers who will also remember Monday night as the night they scored an emphatic victory over crosstown rival Greenwood High.

Wrestling v GWD 1312
The night began when Emerald and Greenwood High both dispatched Ware Shoals. The applause was modest and the intensity was low during these two initial matches. The tension in the gym at Greenwood High rose exponentially as soon as the Eagles and Vikings lined up on either side of the mat. The opening contest was between Seth Callahan (Emerald) and Jordan (Greenwood) in the 170 pound weight class. Greenwood won this contest with a pin in the 2nd period. Greenwood forfeited the 182 pound class to Luke Newton, and the score was 6-6. The Greenwood sideline erupted in jubilation over the next few minutes as the Eagles scored pins in the 195, 220, and 285 weight classes to extend their lead to 24-6. At this point the Vikings moved into the strength of their lineup behind the wrestling skills of Emmanuel Gonzalez (106) and Koby Moore (113), who both scored pins, cutting the Eagles’ lead to 24-18. Greenwood won the next match to extend their lead to 27-18. Greenwood would fail to light up the scoreboard for the remainder of the evening. Drew Adams (126) scored a 4-point decision to cut the lead to 27-22. Nick Long (132) pinned his opponent and silenced the crowd by giving the Vikings a 28-27 lead. The Eagles forfeited the next three weight classes and the Viking lead ballooned to 46-27. Jacob Callahan (170) scored a pin against Tim Ewing in the final contest of the evening and placed an exclamation point on the 52-27 Viking victory.
